Introducing: Sonnets For The Soul.
A collection dedicated to the natural flow of the soul.
I have decided to embark upon a quest to start writing Sonnets more regularly.
This has been sparked by the recognition that there are increasingly more moments in my life where I would like to encourage words to flow through me, without consulting any of my minds usual thought processes. These moments usually occur when surrounded by nature or immersed in the creative arts.
Essentially, I am craving a way of nurturing a deeper sense of presence as part of my writing journey; a doorway to be more comfortable with my rawest expressions.
Since committing to writing I have noticed that I have a tendency to “over” think and analyse my selection of words, sentence structures and choice of content. What ever I am crafting at the time consumes my mind. I find myself zooming into every single detail and tweaking parameters here and there until things look and feel “optimal”.
This is perfectly reasonable and arguably warranted when sharing ones work with others. Especially, when writing longer pieces which aim to introduce potentially unfamiliar topics or discussing personal, complex and sensitive subject matters (I must add, that this is something that I absolutely love and which will continue to be my primary form of writing.)
However, I wanted to find an additional and alternative medium which allowed me to translate my musings straight from my felt senses to the page, whilst taking a sharp turn away from the ingrained scientist in me- who is often working overtime these days.
The term Sonnet derives from the Italian word sonetto, which means “little song” from the Latin word sonus for 'sound'. It refers to a fixed verse poetic form, traditionally consisting of fourteen lines adhering to a set rhyming scheme.
Originating in 13th-century Sicily, the Sonnet was originally taken up in many European-language areas to express love at first sight.
I have chosen to channel some of my energy into creating Sonnets primarily because rhyming has always come very naturally to me.
Amazingly, I have found the task of devising rhyming couplets triggers a cascade of subconscious emotions to come through me as I put my words down. For this reason, the Sonnets original expressive purpose of “love at first sight” really resonates with me, as it gives me the sense of something that is capable of “gushing out” of the expresser, without consulting the mind.
I also very much liked hearing that Sonnets originated in Sicily. This is where my family come from, so it feels quite fitting to be creating something that was craved into history by a place that is close to my heart.
With that, I hereby introduce “Sonnets For the Soul”.
A project in which I declare that: when inspired by a moment, I give permission for my words to flow through me in the form of a little song.
No editing, no dictionary, no obsessing over sentence structure.
Just pure unfiltered flow in one sitting.
Here’s the first in the series: In. Body. Soul
